BE - I too this photo at an outdoor book market in Paris. Through 2020, many have learned about being rather than doing as we've been in and out of quarantine, shutdowns, and lockdowns.  Exploring and adventure doesn't always mean traveling somewhere, join me as I blog and explore!

Hungary, Life Lessons

July 31, 2015

Like a flood.

WOW!  What a whirlwind!  I’m here in Hungary, Finally (My next post will be about English Camp!).  I wanted to share a story about our arrival on July 8.

Travel was an adventure to say the least.  Our flight out of Philadelphia was an hour late and upon arriving in Paris we had 30 minutes from landing until the departure of our next flight.  I along with 4 volunteers RAN across Charles DeGalles airport to make our flight. Unfortunately, our luggage did not.

A couple of us took a taxi from the airport. Well, the weather turned nasty just as we stepped in the taxi, it started to rain, then the skies turned black.  First wind, then hail, finally a monsoon blanketing our windshield.  The waters were rising, trees were torn down and had fallen into the streets, in fact, the roads were so flooded that we couldn’t navigate the planned route, it took us twice as long to arrive at the house!

Yet, it was beautiful watching people gather together in the downpour to clear the downed trees so cars could get by and life could go on.  That ride “home” really caught me by surprise and at one point i turned to the phone-camera and said “I hope my whole time in Hungary isn’t like this”.  The storm, it’s real, it’s destructive and it creates the opportunity for people band together and allow new life to grow. All from a flood…

Looking back at this journey, the start of something new beginning with a great rain… I am reminded of Isaiah 59.  (check out the whole chapter here)

“19 In the west, people will respect the name of the Lord;
    in the east, they will glorify him.
For he will come like a raging flood tide
    driven by the breath of the Lord.

20 “The Redeemer will come to Jerusalem
    to buy back those in Israel
who have turned from their sins,”
    says the Lord.

21 “And this is my covenant with them,” says the Lord. “My Spirit will not leave them, and neither will these words I have given you. They will be on your lips and on the lips of your children and your children’s children forever. I, the Lord, have spoken!”

CATCH THIS: Here’s what the footnote on verse 19 says “When the enemy comes like a raging flood tide, the Spirit of the Lord will drive him back.”   This is such a powerful image to me.  I reflect for a moment as I prepare for life to feel like a flood … There will be times where discouragement could run rampant, where fear could sweep away any hope, times when lies could control, or self-doubt could lead to being paralysed.  BUT take to heart the very things that have the potential to be damaging can just as easily swept away by a stronger force, all the uncontrollable can be driven back, and any destruction that does occur can be redeemed and renewed.
Have you experienced a destructive flood [internally or externally]?  What was the end result?
