The next morning was the first full day at camp. When we arrived you could see some of the kids wearing all the clothing they received the day before. We had a small worship time with the Ukrainian team before we started the morning session for the kids. Yesterday they had informed us that we are not allowed by the orphanage’s director to pray or read the Bible with the children and they will have people looking in on us. Trying to do a “service” without prayer or Bible reading while trying to turn the children towards God can be tough. Around 20 children showed up to the service. Afterwards we had crafts and sports followed by a life lesson class. We taught the kids about personal hygiene.
For lunch we went over to Pastor Slava’s (youth pastor from the local church) house. He lives only a 10 minute walk away from the orphanage which is great because he is so close to the children. It was a good time with our Ukrainian brothers and sisters and some delicious food! All the food on the trip has been nothing short of amazing!
In the evening we went back to the orphanage and to their indoor gym to play some games before evening service. The orphanage is in much better conditions than what we thought we would find. It is very clean and spans three separate buildings, the kids even have a weight room. The children really started opening up more to us as the day went along. During the evening service, Maxim delivered a sermon about how to see our true worth and be content with the way God has made us to be. We also preformed a skit using silhouettes and acting out the creation of Adam and Eve since the theme of the day was creation. When we were starting to leave to go to the place we are staying (also 10 minute walk away) one of the orphans (Ruslan) walked us back singing and playing games all the way.
We are very excited to see all the things God is going to do in us and though us on this trip. Although the weather is holding up in Ukraine some of us are getting sick but it seems to be passing on. 🙂
